In response to members’ requests in a recent survey for briefings from U.S. and Taiwan authorities to help them deal with Cross-Strait challenges impacting the business environment, AmCham Taiwan launched a new webinar series, “Spotlight on Resilience.” Reference materials and helpful links will also be available under that tab on our website. To maximize participation, most briefings will take place via Webex.
US and western companies face significant challenges in ensuring that they are compliant with restrictions on doing business with Chinese companies that provide military end-use products/services, employ forced labor, or appear on US sanctions lists for other reasons. Uncovering military ties, connections to sanctioned entities, and use of forced labor in supply chains is a daunting, time consuming task and one that requires specialized knowledge. In this Webinar, Thys DeBruyn and his team will discuss these challenges, reveal best practice methodologies, and offer insights on leveraging compliance intelligence in competitive scenarios.
Speakers:
Thys DeBruyn
Thys spent 23 years as a China specialist in the CIA, concluding his career as the Agency’s Chief of China Operations. Thys spent 15 years in overseas assignments including field command positions in various Asian posts. In Washington, Thys regularly briefed Congressional oversight committees and senior policy makers on China issues. Since joining Pamir in 2010, Thys has worked with clients in the aerospace, agriculture, automation, chemical/biochemical, energy, financial services, heavy equipment, pharmaceutical and semiconductor industries, helping them understand the complex network of Chinese actors that engage in foreign technology acquisition. He brings an understanding of these actors’ priorities, capabilities and methodologies that enables companies to strengthen their protection of innovation and competitive advantage.
Leah Holder
Leah spent many years as a Chinese language analyst at the National Security Agency supporting government and military customers. She brings a wealth of data research and analysis skills to Pamir and leads the development of new research and collection. Leah has a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from University of Michigan, an MA in International Affairs from George Washington University, is pursuing an MS in Data Science through Northwestern University, and studied at Peking University.
Steve Hendershot
Steve served in the FBI with assignments in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and was the FBI Assistant Legal Attaché, and Legal Attaché at the U.S. Embassy Beijing from 2003-2008. Following federal service, he worked in the lottery and gaming industry as a Compliance officer covering Asia, including lottery operations in China. Steve earned a BA from Walsh College and a JD from the University of Akron. He studied Chinese at the Defense Language Institute, National Taiwan Normal University, and in China.
