With the U.S. Presidential election on November 5 expected to be highly competitive, the results could be among the most consequential in American history. To provide AmCham members with deeper insights into the election results and their potential significance, this discussion will focus on the outcomes of the election, and offer a comprehensive understanding of the impact on American industries and U.S.-Taiwan relations.

Ambassador Kurt Tong is Managing Partner at The Asia Group, where he leads East Asian regional policy matters. He also leads the firm’s innovative thought leadership programs. A leading expert in diplomacy and economic affairs in East Asia, Ambassador Tong brings thirty years of experience in the Department of State as a career Foreign Service Officer and member of the Senior Foreign Service. Ambassdor Tong held senior roles fo the U.S. Government including U.S. Ambassador to APEC, Chief of Mission and Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau, Deputy Chief of Mission for U.S. Embassy in Beijing, among other leadership positions in the government.

Syaru Shirley Lin, Chair and Founder of CAPRI

Syaru Shirley Lin, research professor at the Miller Center and a nonresident senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution, teaches at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University in Beijing, and National Chengchi University in Taipei. Lin is the founder and chair of the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation (CAPRI) and a steering committee member of the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience under the World Economic Forum.
Her book, Taiwan’s China Dilemma, analyzes the impact of the evolution of Taiwanese national identity on cross-Strait economic policy. Lin is currently writing a book on the challenges facing high-income societies in Asia Pacific, including inequality, demographic decline, inadequate policy and technological innovation, and threats to public health and environmental sustainability. Her commentaries frequently appear in both English and Chinese media. Previously, she was a partner at Goldman Sachs, where she led the firm’s private equity and venture capital efforts in Asia.

Dr. Joseph Eaton, Associate Professor of History at National Chengchi University (NCCU)
國立政治大學歷史學系 周一騰教授
Joseph Eaton, Associate Professor of History at National Chengchi University, holds a PhD from Columbia University. He has served as a Fulbright Scholar and Research Fellow, with a focus on American history, international relations, and sports diplomacy. His book, The Anglo-American Paper War, explores debates about the U.S. republic between 1800-1825. Eaton has received teaching awards and published extensively in journals such as Diplomatic History and The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. His research also covers Sino-American relations and America’s global image.
