The Edelman Trust Barometer is the largest global survey and foremost authority on trust in business, government, media and NGOs. Now in its 20th year, the Trust Barometer, which launches each year at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, surveys more than 34,000 people in 28 markets.
The Spring findings show that trust in government has surged 11 points to an all-time high during the Covid-19 pandemic, making it the most trusted institution. On the other hand, despite a 4-point increase in trust in Business, people are disappointed in their leadership. Only four months ago, Business was the most trusted institution. In addition, the pandemic has intensified existing perceptions of economic inequalities, further adding to the concern of personal safety.
This is a moment of reckoning for business and the promise of a stakeholder approach must now be delivered. If business doesn’t demonstrate both competence and empathy in the coming months, it could open the door to more permanent government involvement in the economy.
