Taipei American School (TAS), founded in 1949, is an independent, coeducational Pre-K to 12 day school offering an American-based education for students from 38 countries. Two semesters run August-December and January-June.
A hybrid board of nine elected Board members and four appointed Board members governs TAS.
TAS is located in Tianmu, a northern suburb of Taipei. Parents include business professionals, foreign government employees, and educators.
TAS is known for its strong academics, dynamic integration of technology, extensive co-curricular activities, character education, and fine arts. Exemplary subject standards and benchmarks from the U.S. make up the curriculum. Grades 9-12 offer a rigorous, college-preparatory program with honors, AP, and IB courses, leading to a U.S. high school diploma or an IB diploma. More than 98% of TAS graduates continue studies at colleges and universities, primarily in the U.S. Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredits TAS.
Occupying 6.5 hectares, TAS has approximately 250 classrooms, including science, robotics, and computer labs. During the 2016-2017 school year, construction began on the Tech Cube facility, a new building for K-12 STEAM education. The campus is wireless to support the one-to-one laptop initiative in Grades 3-12. The campus also features a four-story library/IT/ media complex, music and art facilities, three dance studios, and three theaters. Sports facilities include three gyms, tennis courts, a track, two playing fields with artificial turf, a 25-meter indoor swimming pool, putting and driving green, a fitness center and four campus dining locations.
