AmCham Taiwan and AIT Convene 2026 Cancer Summit
Advancing Strategies for Funding Taiwan’s Connected Cancer Care Ecosystem

TAIPEI, Taiwan – The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (AmCham Taiwan), together with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), hosted the 2026 AmCham Taiwan Cancer Summit at the Regent Taipei on July 28. Under the theme “Advancing ‘Healthy Taiwan’: Setting Global Benchmarks through Strategic Investment,” the summit brought together leaders from government, industry, academia, and patient advocacy groups to discuss how to optimize resource allocation for Taiwan’s Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF), enhance access to innovative therapies, and further align Taiwan’s cancer care system with international standards of care.

“Cancer remains one of the most complex global health challenges, and addressing it requires not only scientific breakthroughs, but also strong partnerships, sustainable investment, and effective collaboration across sectors,” said AmCham Taiwan President Carl Wegner in his opening remarks. He also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships, stressing the need to translate innovation into meaningful improvements for patients and build a more resilient and future-ready healthcare system.

Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang joined the event’s Grand Keynote Dialogue, where he shared the government’s strategy for advancing national health transformation through the establishment of the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee, highlighting the initiative’s vision and key policy milestones.

“Cancer prevention and control cannot be sustained without stable, long-term funding,” Minister Shih said. “We have increased the cancer screening budget from NT$2.8 billion to NT$6.8 billion and established the Cancer Drug Fund in 2025 to help drug reimbursement keep pace with international treatment guidelines. We are also advancing the digital transformation of cancer care to streamline prior authorization and other administrative procedures, and to use the data collected for follow-up evaluation, helping ensure that budget resources are used more effectively.”

Minister Shih added that in order to achieve Taiwan’s goal of reducing the standardized cancer mortality rate by one-third by 2030, the government will review the mortality burden and treatment gaps across different cancer types, prioritize them accordingly, and implement tailored prevention and treatment plans. By directing resources more precisely, Taiwan can accelerate the reduction in overall cancer mortality.

The AmCham Taiwan Cancer Summit reflects President Lai Ching-te’s Healthy Taiwan vision to reshape Taiwan’s cancer care landscape and serves the national goal of reducing the standardized cancer mortality rate by one-third by 2030. Building on this national objective, this year’s program centered on two key themes. The first panel discussion focused on the strategic investment and long-term sustainability of the CDF. Panelists explored how more effective resource allocation can improve and accelerate patient access to innovative therapies while maintaining the long-term sustainability of Taiwan’s National Health Insurance system.

The second panel discussion focused on strengthening alignment between Taiwan’s cancer care system and international standards of care. Medical experts representing different cancer fields shared the latest clinical developments and approaches in the treatment of breast cancer, gynecologic cancers, hematologic malignancies, and other cancer types, while discussing how Taiwan can further align with internationally recognized clinical guidelines, including those developed by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). The discussion also highlighted the importance of strengthening comprehensive care pathways spanning early diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up to further improve the quality of cancer care in Taiwan.

AmCham Taiwan reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with government agencies, industry partners, healthcare professionals, and patient advocacy groups to strengthen Taiwan’s cancer care system through continued policy dialogue and U.S.-Taiwan healthcare collaboration to help realize a healthier Taiwan.

About the Cancer Summit

Since 2021, AmCham Taiwan and the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) have jointly organized healthcare innovation forums to promote dialogue on healthcare policy and industry collaboration between Taiwan and the United States. Beginning in 2023, under the leadership of AmCham Taiwan’s Pharmaceutical Committee, the forum adopted the Cancer Summit as its primary platform, focusing specifically on cancer care and treatment innovation.

Now in its fourth year, the Cancer Summit traces its origins to U.S.-Taiwan collaboration inspired by the Cancer Moonshot initiative. As cancer continues to be one of the world’s most significant public health challenges, with incidence rates rising steadily, reducing cancer mortality has become a shared public health priority for both Taiwan and the United States. Through this platform, stakeholders from both sides continue to exchange policy perspectives and advance recommendations that support better cancer care, improved patient outcomes, and stronger bilateral collaboration in healthcare.
