AmCham Taiwan Comments on Provisional Tariff Announcement
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan notes the White House announcement of a provisional 20% tariff on imports from Taiwan, effective August 7. This action is part of a broader tariff framework imposed by the U.S. administration, with rates ranging from 10% to 41% on goods from multiple countries.
The provisional nature of the tariff signals that negotiations remain ongoing. Taiwanese officials have emphasized that the 20% rate is temporary and that efforts are underway to secure a lower final rate.
“Businesses on both sides of the Pacific are looking for predictability and a stable environment in which to operate,” said AmCham Taiwan Chairperson Dan Silver. “We continue to believe that the U.S. economic relationship with Taiwan is at its best when barriers are removed and the complementary nature of the relationship is allowed to flourish.”
Although many Taiwanese industries are highly resilient and globally integrated, the new tariffs are expected to raise costs for exporters and may impact pricing, investment decisions, and production strategies in the short term. According to a recent analysis by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, the most affected sectors include machine tools, plastics, electronic materials, molds, and hand tools – many of which are dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Some manufacturers are already exploring options such as localizing production in the U.S. or diversifying into non-U.S. markets.
AmCham Taiwan will continue to monitor the evolving policy landscape, support member companies in assessing the impact of the new tariff structure, and serve as a platform for government-industry engagement. We also thank the U.S. and Taiwan negotiating teams for their ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, underscoring both sides’ commitment to a stable, mutually beneficial relationship that fosters growth and innovation.
“This is a pivotal moment for U.S.-Taiwan economic relations,” said AmCham Taiwan President Carl Wegner. “The strength of our trade relationship lies not just in market access, but in our shared commitment to innovation, transparency, and partnership. We remain committed to supporting ongoing dialogue and to ensuring that our members are equipped to navigate this period of adjustment.”
As Taiwan plays a vital role in global supply chains, particularly high-tech manufacturing, AmCham urges both governments to maintain close communication and avoid prolonged disruptions that could weaken business confidence.
