AmCham Taiwan Comments on U.S.-Taiwan Tariffs
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan expresses its strong concern over the broad-based tariffs recently imposed on Taiwan. We call on Taiwan’s many friends in Congress and across Washington – including President Trump and members of his Administration – to exempt Taiwan from trade actions that could jeopardize the stability and trust underpinning the U.S.-Taiwan relationship. Moreover, we urge all parties to work in the spirit of mutual trust and collaboration that has long defined the U.S.-Taiwan relationship to address trade concerns and secure a stronger future built on innovation, investment, and shared growth.
AmCham Taiwan Chairperson Dan Silver stressed the importance of free and fair trade practices and sound economic policies that promote productivity and predictability. “Certainty and stability are essential for our members to operate effectively and contribute to healthy, sustainable economic development,” he said. “We urge both governments to accelerate negotiations that reduce these duties to the lowest possible levels while ensuring transparency, clarity, and fairness in the process.”
The Chamber notes and supports President Lai’s reaffirmation of Taiwan’s commitment to the bilateral partnership, including his call for reciprocal tariff reductions and greater market alignment. “Taiwan has long acted in good faith to address trade imbalances and remains a reliable partner to the United States,” said Silver.
It is also important to acknowledge that Taiwan has made sustained, good-faith efforts over many years to address the trade imbalance with the United States. These new tariffs overlook both the facts behind that imbalance and the broader context of Taiwan’s contributions to the bilateral economic partnership.
As one of the world’s most innovative economies – consistently ranked among the top five globally in U.S. patent filings per capita – Taiwan has long contributed to U.S. competitiveness and resilience across key industries.
AmCham Taiwan remains fully committed to strengthening U.S.-Taiwan ties and advancing an open, rules-based trade environment that benefits both economies.
