American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan Applauds Passage of Critical Aid Legislation
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (AmCham Taiwan) wholeheartedly applauds the passage of vital legislation by the U.S. Congress and its signing into law by President Biden to provide much-needed assistance to Taiwan, Ukraine, and other key allies. This decisive action reinforces the United States’ commitment to global leadership and its unwavering support for democracies facing intimidation from authoritarian regimes.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson for his leadership in ending a stalemate and enabling this critical legislation to come to a vote, to the members of the House of Representatives and Senate who provided overwhelming support for this bill, and to President Biden for the White House’s backing of this initiative.
AmCham Taiwan has been a vocal advocate for the passage of this critical legislation. We previously issued a public statement urging swift action, directly contacted several key members of Congress, and emphasized the urgency of this support in meetings with legislators and staff visiting Taiwan. These efforts reflect AmCham’s longstanding commitment to strengthening the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, which has thrived under the Taiwan Relations Act since 1979.
“The passage of this legislation signifies a crucial victory for like-minded democratic partners and a clear message of support for the rules-based international order,” said Dan Silver, Chairperson of AmCham Taiwan. “We are particularly gratified by the significant support for Taiwan and regional neighbors included in this package. This vital assistance will contribute to regional stability and help sustain the right environment for economic and business growth.”
AmCham Taiwan remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering an enduring partnership between the United States and Taiwan. We believe this legislation represents a pivotal step forward in safeguarding democratic values and promoting peace and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
