AmCham Taiwan Launches ESG Co-Learning Program
HSINCHU, Taiwan – The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan announced the launch of its ESG Co-Learning Program on June 16. The announcement was made during a visit to Hsinchu City as part of the Chamber’s Living AmCham Taiwan series, which this year focuses on “Urban Sustainability and Governance.” Following Hsinchu, AmCham plans to visit several other cities, including Taichung, Taipei, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.
AmCham’s ESG Co-Learning Program provides a platform for the public and private sectors to learn about sustainable measures and promotes members’ practical involvement in the ESG field through a Public-Private Learning Partnership model. This initiative strengthens the connection between AmCham member companies and wider society in Taiwan, building a resilient and sustainable future for all parties involved.
During a luncheon with members and representatives from Hsinchu City Government, AmCham President Amy Chang emphasized that ESG has been a significant theme for the Chamber in recent years. Chang invited the Hsinchu City Government to participate in the newly established ESG Co-Learning Program. This initiative not only promotes diversity among participants but also fosters strong alignment between industry and government, facilitating joint efforts toward a sustainable future.
Special guest Hsinchu City Mayor Ann Kao shared the city’s experience in sustainable urban governance. Kao emphasized that Hsinchu City is a major hub for high-tech industries that play an essential role in the global supply chain. In line with the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and the Climate Change Response Act, the city established a council and an office for sustainable development and climate change adaptation this year.
The one-day event in Hsinchu additionally included visits to member companies TSMC and UMC, where participants learned about how the semiconductor industry works to achieve greater sustainability. The Chamber invited Po Wen Wu, associated vice president at UMC’s Manufacturing Resource Integration, to share UMC’s efforts based on the principles of “People-Orientation, Coexistence with the Environment, and Shared Prosperity with Society.” Wu highlighted UMC’s contributions to positive environmental, societal, and economic developments in recent years.
