U.S.-Taiwan Ties Celebrated on Washington’s Capitol Hill
In keeping with a surge in interest in all things Taiwan, yesterday Washington’s Capitol Hill hosted the launch of Taiwan Matters for America/America Matters for Taiwan, a booklet summarizing U.S.-Taiwan relations. The event held in the Rayburn Building of the House of Representatives drew Taiwan Congressional Caucus leaders from both chambers, Taiwan’s deputy representative in Washington, and a total of about 100 friends and supporters of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, reflecting the degree to which support for Taiwan has become a unifying cause.
The reception was on behalf of a small publication that speaks volumes about a relationship which has come to be appreciated as central to peace and prosperity in East Asia. The East-West Center (EWC) is an education and research organization based in Honolulu, Hawaii, which produced Taiwan Matters for America with the research support of the American Chamber in Taiwan (AmCham).
Taiwan Matters is the latest in a series of monographs published by the EWC that highlight the economic, security, people-to-people, and various other relations between the U.S. and its partners in the Indo-Pacific. It contains data and stories demonstrating how important America and Taiwan are to one another. Beyond economics and political matters, it chronicles educational exchanges and other programs that bolster mutual understanding.
“AmCham Taiwan was honored to play a small part in bringing this compact but information-rich volume into print,” noted chamber Senior Adviser Don Shapiro, who flew to Washington for the event. “Given the breadth and depth of Taiwan’s contributions to public health, democratic practice, youth education and technological advancement in the past few years, alone, Taiwan Matters for America is a timely assessment of an important U.S. partner and global player.”
Taiwan Matters for America/America Matters for Taiwan can be viewed online at https://asiamattersforamerica.org/taiwan/publications. Hard copies are available from AmCham Taiwan upon request.
