AmCham Celebrates 70 Years at the Taipei Guest House
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan was honored to be welcomed into the Taipei Guest House on December 8, 2021, to celebrate its 70th anniversary. The gathering drew more than 185 members and their guests, as well as over 35 high-ranking government officials and VIPs.
President Tsai Ing-wen delivered keynote remarks at the event, while Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu and AmCham Chair CW Chin gave welcome remarks. American Institute in Taiwan Director Sandra Oudkirk and AmCham President Andrew Wylegala also spoke at the reception.
Any organization’s 70th anniversary is special, but AmCham Taiwan’s celebration caps a particularly significant year for the Chamber, which has for seven decades worked tirelessly to advocate on behalf of the international business community in Taiwan. In addition to successfully carrying out the transition from “AmCham Taipei” to “AmCham Taiwan” this year, embracing a name that reflects the breadth of its reach, the Chamber also hit a record in total membership and established for the first time ever an industry committee focused on the semiconductor sector.
That AmCham has continued to grow despite Taiwan’s outbreak of local COVID-19 infections this past summer reflects the Chamber’s resiliency.
In his speech, CW Chin applauded the enduring partnership between the U.S. and Taiwan, as well as AmCham’s role in supporting positive developments in that relationship over the past 70 years. One such example was the U.S.’ donation of 2.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in June, which it followed up with another 1.5 million doses in early November.
“Based on our shared values and our commitment to public-private collaboration, may the U.S. and Taiwan continue to prosper together as we tackle pressing global challenges such as the pandemic and supply chain disruptions,” said Chin.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu commended AmCham Taiwan on bringing the U.S. and Taiwan much closer economically. “The fact that AmCham has been growing tremendously, and American investment in Taiwan has also been growing says that Taiwan is not only safe, but it is also a good place to make investments and do business,” he said.
AIT Director Oudkirk offered her warm congratulations to AmCham on “70 momentous and productive years as the premier organization dedicated to solidifying U.S.-Taiwan business ties” and an important partner to AIT. “The U.S. business community has been a significant contributor to growth and development both here and in the United States, and AmCham Taiwan has flourished along with Taiwan’s economy.”
AmCham will continue to act as a voice for its diverse membership, comprising both international and domestic firms, and work toward the strengthening of U.S.-Taiwan business and economic ties.
