AmCham Taipei Applauds Taiwan’s Move to Open Beef and Pork Market

The American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (AmCham Taipei) greatly appreciates President Tsai Ing-wen’s announcement that her government will act to remove Taiwan’s restrictions on imports of pork and beef from the United States. The Chamber applauds the Tsai administration for its efforts to adopt international standards and take a scientific approach to resolve this longstanding issue.

AmCham Taipei hopes that Taiwan’s decision will lead to a positive response from the U.S. regarding the possibility of entering into negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement. The current atmosphere appears especially favorable for such a step to bolster the bilateral relationship. Passage of the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act early this year was a strong indication of U.S. Congressional support for Taiwan, and Taiwan’s reliable handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and donation of protective gear to the U.S. won it considerable attention and good will in the U.S.

A BTA would be in the best interest of both the U.S. and Taiwan for strategic as well as economic reasons. During this period of flux in the world economy, such a trade agreement would strengthen the strong trade bonds between the two sides and further their common objectives for ensuring regional peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
